Western Bay of Plenty region
Transpower is planning a major capex proposal to investigate maintaining a reliable electricity supply in the Western Bay of Plenty.
Transpower has identified an investment need to appropriately address the transmission capacity and constraints related to forecast demand growth and development in the rapidly growing Western Bay of Plenty region.
On 6 July 2023, Transpower and the Commission agreed to a consultation programme, approval timeframe and approach to considering non-transmission solutions. As Transpower develops the project, Transpower and the Commission will review the timeframes as necessary.
On 20 December 2024, Transpower submitted their Western Bay of Plenty major capex proposal, and on 3 April 2025, we published our Draft decision on Transpower’s WBOP MCP.
On 11 June 2025, we published our final decision on Transpower’s WBOP MCP. Documents can be found below.
