John has been the Commission’s Chair since 2022 and during his tenure has been instrumental in advancing key market studies — including the latest personal banking market study.

Last year, John played a pivotal role in establishing the Energy Competition Task Force — a joint initiative with the Electricity Authority — bringing together expertise and a shared commitment to strengthen competition and encourage investment in the electricity market for the benefit of consumers.

He has helped shape the Commission’s emerging responsibilities under the Local Water Done Well regime and as Crown monitor for Watercare.

John has also overseen the implementation of the Grocery Industry Competition Act and the appointment of the first Grocery Commissioner.

In other appointment news, Associate Commissioner Stephen Ridgeway’s cross-appointment to the Commission has also been renewed. Stephen is recognised as one of Australia’s leading competition and consumer lawyers. His expertise has been hugely valuable to the Commission, especially when it comes to mergers involving businesses across both Australia and New Zealand.
