Competition Legal Team – Management roles

 

  • 2 x Principal Counsel positions (to fulfil the previous role of Deputy General Counsel)
  • Intellectual leadership and management of a team of lawyers   
  • Technically challenging litigation and analysis
  • Wellington Based

 

The Commerce Commission’s purpose is to achieve the best possible outcomes in competitive and regulated markets for the long-term benefit of New Zealanders.

 

The General Counsel, Competition Branch is seeking to appoint 2 x Principal Counsel, each to lead a team of lawyers.  The teams deliver a programme of litigation, and provide investigative assistance.

 

The appointees will report directly to the General Counsel. Each Principal will contribute significantly to our organisational reputation, and will be visible, proactive and trusted in all situations. Appointees will be sophisticated drafters and advisers, with excellent judgement in handling demanding and large-scale matters.

The successful applicants will show intellectual leadership within the Commission, including with the senior leadership team and the Board. They will be adept and persuasive in external situations, and will have the ability to positively influence team performance and develop staff.

 

Principal Counsel, Competition

This Principal will lead a team of lawyers working on investigations and litigation in the areas of collusive practices, unilateral conduct, clearances and authorisations.  The role requires:

 

  • In-depth proven expertise in competition law and its frameworks, including fluency in economic principles, statutory interpretation  and case-law.
  • Experience in the successful management of large-scale litigation and familiarity with civil procedure.

 

Principal Counsel, Informed Consumer

This Principal will lead a team of lawyers working on investigations and litigation in the areas of fair trading and consumer credit. The role requires:

 

  • Considerable experience in complex commercial litigation, or criminal litigation with a commercial dimension.
  • Consumer law knowledge (advantageous).
  • Expertise in and familiarity with civil and criminal procedure.

 

Private sector experience is not essential for either role, but is strongly preferred.  The roles will be remunerated to appropriately reflect the seniority of the successful candidates.
