Upper South Island Grid Upgrade Stage 2

Subscribe to Upper South Island Grid Upgrade Stage 2

Transpower has established that the peak demand of the upper south Island is reaching the capacity of the transmission grid supplying the region. Transpower is planning to upgrade the Upper South Island grid to increase the transmission capacity of the 220 kV circuits connected to Islington Substation.

On 11 February 2013, The Commission approved a major capex proposal for stage one of the upgrade. Transpower is now planning stage 2 of the upgrade. The planning process includes consultation with stakeholders and an approach to considering non-transmission solutions.

Transpower and the Commission agreed to a consultation timetable and approach for considering non-transmission solutions in February 2013. The agreed timetable is available below.

Transpower expects to submit its proposal for stage 2 of the project for the Commission's approval towards the end of 2013.
