Transpower is therefore planning to upgrade the Upper South Island grid to increase the transmission capacity of the 220 kV circuits connected to Islington Substation.
On 29 June 2012, Transpower submitted to the Commission a major capex proposal for stage one of the South Island Reliability Upgrade. The proposal includes the following work packages:
- A 220 kV bus coupler at Islington that will improve the reliability of electricity transmission to the Upper South Island.
- Install load monitoring equipment in Transpower substations located in the Upper South Island.
- Preliminary works for stage two of the Upper South Island reliability upgrade.
