Commission welcomes appointment of Telecommunications Commissioner
4 July 2012
The Commerce Commission welcomes Dr Stephen Gale to the position of Telecommunications Commissioner.
His appointment has been announced this morning by the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Hon Amy Adams.
"I look forward to working with Dr Gale in his new role," said Dr Mark Berry, Chair of the Commerce Commission. "Dr Gale brings a strong background in industry regulation and economics to the job," said Dr Berry.
Dr Gale has worked as an economic adviser to businesses and government on competition matters and since July 2010 has been an Associate Commissioner at the Commerce Commission. Since February 2012, Dr Gale has been a member of the Commission's Telecommunications division.
Dr Berry also acknowledged the work of the outgoing Telecommunications Commissioner, Dr Ross Patterson.
"Dr Patterson has led a number of high profile work streams in his time as Telecommunications Commissioner. He oversaw the Commission's work on mobile termination rates which has led to a drop in mobile charges for consumers, and has been leading the Commission's work in putting the regulatory arrangements in place following the separation of Telecom into Telecom and Chorus," Dr Berry said.
The role of Telecommunications Commissioner is appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister for Communications and Information Technology.
