The Commerce Commission has decided that a new wholesale VDSL2 service offered by Telecom New Zealand Limited does not need to be regulated, as it incorporates a number of features not included in the regulated unbundled bitstream access (UBA) service, and it is appropriate that the market determines the price for this enhanced service.

The quality of New Zealand's broadband services are continuing to improve according to a report released by the Commerce Commission today. The report, covering from 1 January - 30 June 2010, aims to provide a comparison of the relative performance of internet service providers (ISPs) in delivering broadband services in the major New Zealand cities.

The Commerce Commission has today recommended to the Minister for Communications and Information Technology that a number of services that Telecom New Zealand Limited provides to other telecommunications companies to be resold should no longer be subject to the Telecommunications Act 2001.

Number portability determination extended

In a final determination issued today the Commerce Commission has extended the current arrangement for number portability for both local and mobile telephone numbers for another six years. Number portability enables a customer to change their telecommunications provider but retain the same telephone number.

The Commerce Commission has today issued a notice to Vodafone New Zealand Limited to prepare a standard terms proposal for terminating mobile calls and text messages. This proposal will specify the non-price terms and conditions on which mobile termination services should be made available to both mobile and fixed line operators. The price of the mobile termination access services (MTAS) will be specified by the Commission.
