Air New Zealand and Qantas

In December 2002, Qantas Airways Limited and Air New Zealand Limited entered into (conditional) agreements that would result in:

• the two airlines entering into a 'strategic alliance'; and
• Qantas being issued (in stages) new equity amounting to up to 22.5% of Air New Zealand's enlarged share capital.

The Commission received a joint application from the parties for a market behaviour authorisation and an application from Qantas for a market structure authorisation to implement the terms of their proposed agreements.
